Gemini
Google's AI assistant — deeply integrated with Google Workspace, strong at multimodal tasks, but still finding its identity against ChatGPT and Claude.
https://gemini.google.com↗The Verdict
Gemini is the right choice if you're a Google Workspace team — the integration is genuinely useful and the free tier is generous. For everyone else, Claude writes better, ChatGPT has more features, and Perplexity searches better. Gemini's video understanding is best-in-class, but that's a niche use case.
Claims vs. Findings
What Gemini says vs. what we found after real use.
What they claim
What we found
They claim
Native integration with Google Workspace (Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Drive)
We found
Workspace integration is Gemini's killer feature — summarise a Google Doc, draft an email from a Sheets report, search across Drive. If you live in Google's ecosystem, this is genuinely useful.
They claim
1 million token context window (Gemini 1.5 Pro) — largest in the industry
We found
The 1M context window is real but quality degrades significantly past 200K tokens. It can hold the data, but retrieval accuracy drops. Claude's 200K is more reliable end-to-end.
They claim
Multimodal from the ground up — understands text, images, video, and audio natively
We found
Multimodal capabilities are strong — video understanding in particular is ahead of the competition. Image analysis is on par with GPT-4o.
They claim
Google Search grounding provides real-time, cited information
We found
Search grounding works well and citations are more reliable than ChatGPT's browsing. Still not as good as Perplexity for pure research.
They claim
Deep Think mode for complex reasoning tasks
We found
Deep Think is competitive with OpenAI's o1 on math and science benchmarks but noticeably slower. Real-world reasoning quality is inconsistent.
The Real Test
Task
We uploaded a 12-minute product demo video to Gemini and asked it to produce a structured summary with timestamps, key features mentioned, and a list of competitor comparisons made by the presenter.
Result
Gemini nailed the video understanding — timestamps were accurate within 5 seconds, it caught all 8 features, and correctly identified 3 of 4 competitor mentions. Claude can't process video at all. ChatGPT's video handling was less accurate on timestamps.
If You Only Use One Feature
Google Workspace integration. Ask Gemini to summarise your last 5 emails from a client, draft a reply based on a Google Doc, or build a chart from a Sheets file. No other AI assistant has this depth of integration with tools most businesses already use.
Pricing Reality
Free tier is generous — Gemini 1.5 Flash is fast and capable for everyday tasks. Premium at $20/month (bundled with Google One 2TB) gives access to 1.5 Pro, longer context, and Workspace integration. The Google One bundle makes this the best value if you already pay for Google storage. Business pricing is $20/user/month via Workspace add-on.
Who Is This For?
Good fit
Teams already deep in Google Workspace — Docs, Sheets, Gmail, Drive
Anyone who needs to analyse video or audio content natively
Users who want an AI assistant with reliable web search built in
Budget-conscious users — the free tier is stronger than ChatGPT's
Not the best fit
Writers who need consistently high-quality prose (Claude is better)
Developers who need coding assistance (Claude Code or Cursor outperform)
Anyone who needs predictable, reliable output — Gemini's quality variance is higher than competitors
Privacy-conscious users uncomfortable with Google having AI access to their workspace data
Best Alternative
ChatGPT
More consistent output quality, larger plugin ecosystem, and better at creative writing. Gemini wins on Google integration and multimodal video, but ChatGPT is the safer all-rounder.
