ChatGPT
General-purpose AI chatbot from OpenAI. Does a bit of everything — writing, coding, analysis, image generation, web search — but masters none.

ChatGPT is the Swiss Army knife of AI — it does almost everything to a 7/10 level. It is the right default tool for people who want one subscription, but power users will outgrow it in specific verticals. Use it alongside Claude (for writing/thinking) and Perplexity (for research) rather than relying on it for everything.
Claims vs. Findings
What ChatGPT says vs. what we found after real use.
What they claim
What we found
They claim
Can reason through complex problems with o1/o3 models
We found
Reasoning models (o1/o3) are genuinely strong for multi-step math, logic, and coding tasks — but they are slow and expensive on the Plus plan (message caps)
They claim
DALL-E 3 integration for image generation from text
We found
DALL-E 3 produces decent images but struggles with text rendering, hands, and consistency across a series — Midjourney and Recraft beat it for quality
They claim
Browse the web in real-time for up-to-date answers
We found
Web browsing works but citations are often shallow — Perplexity does this better with actual source links
They claim
Advanced Data Analysis (formerly Code Interpreter) runs Python in a sandbox
We found
Advanced Data Analysis is legitimately useful for quick CSV exploration and charting — one of the best features
They claim
Memory feature learns your preferences over time
We found
Memory is hit-or-miss — it remembers random facts but forgets important context from earlier conversations
They claim
GPT-4o is the fastest, most capable model
We found
GPT-4o is fast but noticeably less thoughtful than Claude for nuanced writing and long-form analysis
The Real Test
Task
We asked ChatGPT (GPT-4o) to draft a 1,500-word competitive analysis of the Malaysian EdTech market, including real company names, funding data, and strategic recommendations.
Result
It produced a well-structured draft in about 90 seconds. Company names were real, but 3 of 7 funding figures were fabricated (confirmed via Crunchbase). Strategic recommendations were generic — "focus on mobile-first" and "leverage partnerships." Claude produced a draft that was more cautious about unverified data and offered more specific, actionable strategy.
If You Only Use One Feature
Advanced Data Analysis. Drop a CSV or Excel file into the chat and it writes Python code to analyze, chart, and summarize your data. No setup, no installs. For quick data exploration, nothing else is this frictionless.
Pricing Reality
Free tier is genuinely useful for casual questions — GPT-4o mini is fast and decent. Plus at $20/month unlocks GPT-4o, o1, DALL-E, and Advanced Data Analysis, but with message caps that heavy users hit by midweek. Team at $25/user/month adds admin controls. Enterprise pricing is custom. The Plus plan is the sweet spot for most people, but the message caps on reasoning models are frustrating.
Who Is This For?
Good fit
People who want one tool that does 80% of everything (chat, images, code, search)
Teams already in the Microsoft/OpenAI ecosystem
Anyone who needs quick image generation without learning Midjourney
Students and casual users — the free tier is strong
Not the best fit
Writers who need nuanced, thoughtful long-form output (Claude is better)
Developers who need deep codebase understanding (Claude Code or Cursor are better)
Researchers who need reliable citations (Perplexity is better)
Anyone who needs brand-consistent image generation (Recraft is better)
Best Alternative
Claude
Better at nuanced writing, long-context analysis, and thoughtful reasoning. Less hallucination on factual claims. Worse at image generation (no built-in equivalent) and web search.
