Writing Better Prompts
Craft effective prompts that get better results. Learn techniques for clearer communication with AI tools.
Start with context
Give the AI background information before asking your question. Include relevant details about your situation, goals, and constraints.
Weak: "Write a marketing email." Strong: "I'm launching a new productivity app for remote teams. Write a marketing email to our beta users announcing new collaboration features. Keep it under 150 words, friendly and professional tone."
Be specific about format
Tell the AI exactly what output format you want: bullet points, paragraphs, table, code, JSON. This eliminates back-and-forth revisions.
Use examples
Show the AI what good looks like. Provide 1-2 examples of the style, tone, or structure you want. This dramatically improves output quality.
Define constraints
Set clear boundaries: word count, reading level, technical complexity, tone, audience. AI respects limits when they're explicit.
Ask for multiple options
Request 3-5 variations instead of a single answer. This gives you choices and helps you identify patterns in what works well.
Iterate based on output
Review the AI's response and refine your prompt. Ask yourself: What was good? What was missing? What was off-brand? Then adjust and retry.
Save your best prompts
Build a personal prompt library. When you craft a prompt that works well, save it as a template for future use. This compounds your effectiveness.
