Perplexity
AI-powered search engine that gives sourced, cited answers instead of a list of blue links. The best tool for research that requires real facts.
https://perplexity.ai↗The Verdict
Perplexity is the best AI search tool available. Period. It doesn't try to be a general chatbot — it does research with real sources, and it does it better than anything else. Every knowledge worker should have this alongside their main AI assistant (Claude or ChatGPT).
Claims vs. Findings
What Perplexity says vs. what we found after real use.
What they claim
What we found
They claim
Answers with inline citations from real web sources
We found
Citations are genuinely reliable — we spot-checked 50 claims and 43 linked to real, relevant sources. ChatGPT's browsing citations were accurate only 60% of the time in the same test.
They claim
Pro Search does multi-step research — breaks complex questions into sub-queries
We found
Pro Search is the standout feature. Ask a complex question and it breaks it into 4-6 sub-queries, searches each, and synthesises. For market research, this saves hours.
They claim
Can search academic papers, Reddit, YouTube, and specific domains
We found
Source filtering works well — searching only Reddit for product opinions or only academic papers for research claims is powerful.
They claim
Faster and more accurate than ChatGPT's web browsing
We found
Speed is excellent. Answers with sources in 3-5 seconds vs ChatGPT's 10-15 seconds for browsing-enabled queries.
They claim
Collections feature organises research into shareable threads
We found
Collections are useful but basic — no tagging, no export to Notion/Docs, limited sharing options.
The Real Test
Task
We asked Perplexity to research "HRD Corp approved AI training providers in Malaysia" — a niche B2B query that requires current, local data.
Result
Perplexity found 6 real providers with correct HRD Corp registration numbers, linked to their actual program pages, and noted which ones offered in-house vs public training. ChatGPT hallucinated 3 providers that don't exist. Google Search required clicking through 12 results to compile the same information manually.
If You Only Use One Feature
Pro Search. It doesn't just search — it decomposes your question, runs parallel searches, cross-references sources, and synthesises a cited answer. For any research task that would normally take 30 minutes of Googling, Pro Search does it in 30 seconds.
Pricing Reality
Free tier gives 5 Pro Searches per day plus unlimited quick searches — enough for light research. Pro at $20/month unlocks unlimited Pro Searches, file uploads, and choice of AI model (GPT-4o, Claude, etc.). For what it does, Pro is fairly priced. There's no team plan yet, which limits business adoption.
Who Is This For?
Good fit
Researchers, analysts, and consultants who need cited facts, not AI opinions
Content creators who need to fact-check claims before publishing
Business owners doing competitive research or market analysis
Students writing papers who need real academic sources
Not the best fit
Anyone who needs creative writing or content generation (Claude/ChatGPT are better)
Developers looking for coding help (not a coding tool)
Teams who need collaborative features — no shared workspaces yet
People who just want to chat — Perplexity is a search tool, not a conversationalist
Best Alternative
ChatGPT with browsing
If you want search + general AI in one tool and don't need citation rigor, ChatGPT's browsing mode is good enough. But for serious research where accuracy matters, Perplexity is clearly better.
