The Verdict

Niche

Adobe Firefly is the safest choice for commercial AI image work thanks to its licensed training data and IP indemnity. Generative Fill in Photoshop is genuinely best-in-class for photo editing. But as a standalone image generator, it trails Midjourney and DALL-E 3. Best for: Adobe users, enterprise, and regulated industries. Skip if you just need creative AI images.

Claims vs. Findings

What Adobe Firefly says vs. what we found after real use.

1

They claim

Trained only on Adobe Stock, openly licensed, and public domain content — commercially safe

We found

The commercial safety story is Firefly's moat. No other major AI image generator can guarantee their training data is fully licensed. For enterprise and agency use, this matters enormously.

2

They claim

Generative Fill and Expand in Photoshop for surgical image editing

We found

Generative Fill in Photoshop is the most practical AI image feature available. Select an area, describe what you want, and it fills seamlessly. Better than standalone generators for editing existing photos.

3

They claim

Text Effects generates stylised typography from prompts

We found

Standalone generation quality is below Midjourney and on par with DALL-E 3 for most subjects. The "stock photo" aesthetic is a feature for commercial use but a limitation for creative work.

4

They claim

Style Reference and Structure Reference for consistent output

We found

Text Effects are fun and occasionally useful — stylised logos and display typography. Not a replacement for a type designer but good for social media and presentations.

5

They claim

IP indemnity for enterprise customers using Firefly-generated images

We found

IP indemnity is available on enterprise plans and gives legal protection against copyright claims from Firefly output. Unique in the market.

The Real Test

Task

We used Firefly's Generative Fill in Photoshop to extend a product photo background, remove an unwanted object, and add a branded colour gradient — tasks that would normally take 30-60 minutes of manual editing.

Result

Background extension was seamless — the AI matched lighting, texture, and perspective perfectly. Object removal was clean with no visible artefacts. The gradient addition worked but required two attempts to get the colour right. Total time: 8 minutes for all three edits. This is the most genuinely useful AI image tool for photographers and designers working with real photos.

If You Only Use One Feature

Generative Fill in Photoshop. Select any area of a real photo and describe what you want there. Extend backgrounds, remove objects, add elements — all matching the existing photo's lighting and style. This isn't generating images from scratch; it's surgical AI editing of real photos. Nothing else does this as well.

Pricing Reality

Free tier gives 25 generative credits per month — about 25 image generations. Premium at $5/month gives 100 credits. Firefly is also bundled with all Creative Cloud plans (Photography at $10/month, All Apps at $55/month). If you already pay for Photoshop, Firefly features are included. As a standalone image generator, the free tier is too limited and the credit-based system is frustrating. As a Photoshop enhancement, it's a free bonus.

Who Is This For?

Good fit

  • Photographers and designers already using Photoshop — Generative Fill is transformative

  • Enterprise teams that need IP-safe AI image generation with legal indemnity

  • E-commerce businesses that need product photo editing at scale

  • Marketing teams in regulated industries (finance, healthcare) where copyright risk is unacceptable

Not the best fit

  • Creatives looking for artistic, stylised image generation (Midjourney is far more creative)

  • Anyone who doesn't already use Adobe products — standalone Firefly isn't compelling enough

  • Budget users — Adobe's subscription model is expensive compared to Midjourney's flat rate

  • Developers needing an image generation API (DALL-E 3's API is simpler and cheaper)

Best Alternative

Midjourney

Significantly better aesthetic quality for creative image generation. No IP indemnity though, so it's a trade-off: Midjourney for creative quality, Firefly for commercial safety.
